There are many myths believed by those who are suffering from hair loss. These myths plague people as they go through life wondering when hair loss will strike. Some of the myths explain why or when hair loss will occur, some deal with how to treat hair loss, and some deal with ways to prevent hair loss. Here are some of the most common myths:
Myth: Your hair will grow back if you brush it often.
Fact: This myth is based on the fact that brushing your hair stimulates your scalp, and the hope is that the scalp will be stimulated enough to regrow dead hair. What constant brushing does to your hair is simply loosen it from its roots, meaning that you will in fact bald faster.
Myth: Hair loss is caused by your heritage, and you will only go bald if baldness runs on both sides of your family.
Fact: Baldness is caused by many things, and there is no one thing that you can do to stop baldness from striking. Some baldness is passed down through your genes from your parents, but many times baldness is simply a hormonal imbalance in the body. Baldness can be passed down from either parent, and it doesn't require both parents to have the tendency to bald in order for it to be inherited by the children.
Myth: Shaving your head or cutting your hair will help it to regrow stronger and thicker.
Fact: Most people think that shaving your head causes your hair to grow thicker, when in fact it only appears to be thicker. The root of the hair is thickened when you shave, thus giving the overall hair the appearance of being thicker when it is in fact the exact same thickness.
Myth: Hats and caps will cause you to eventually lose your hair
Fact: The premise of this myth is based on the fact that your hair only has a limited amount of blood circulation, and by using a cap you are restricting the flow of blood to your hair. This is not factual simply because hats still allow your head to breathe and the blood to flow properly. In fact, owning and wearing a hat can actually be good for your hair, as it protects your hair from the sun that would damage it.
Myth: Men are the only ones that suffer baldness
Fact: While men are the main victims of pattern baldness, female pattern baldness is present in a larger number of women than you might expect. Both men and women fall victim to pattern baldness, and baldness is no respecter of sex.
Myth: Stress and trauma are causes of hair loss
Fact: If you suffer from extreme stress or an extremely traumatic situation, you body's hormone production is thrown off and you may lose hair. However, this is only in extreme situations, and regular, everyday stress is not enough to cause your hair to fall out.
